There were some mods and I am about to replace the plastic front dial covers with glass (likely winter 2016-2017).  Once you see one of these with glass, there is no comparison when you look at your dull plastic.

 

The images that follow are for wiring hep for those that need to see it in play.  The drawings on line (i.e., Bowlsby drawings) are critical to help with this.  Note that the fuel gauge lighting in a 914 is terrible and I added an extra bulb hole and holder (drill-baby-drill) and soldered that to the bucket from another dead gauge that I had.  I suppose the LED ribbon method is brighter, but because of my modification and LED bulbs, these are bright enough and at night, you need reasonable brightness and contrast not HELLO brightness.

 

In most cases, I replaced the shrink-wrap on the ends.  All contacts were cleaned with brass polish and a toothbrush and then sprayed with contact cleaner to remove any residue.

The black and blue stripe wires are the dimmable light wires.  Brown is always ground on a Porsche 914.  Red with a white stripe is positive leads that are not dimmable.
