Starter Relay and Extra Ground Wire

Scroll Prev Top Next More

EPIC MISTAKE HERE ON THE GROUND WIRE!!!!!

Notice the relay black wire is grounded to the bolt for the solenoid ground, behind the red wires.  Doing this causes the ground to cycle on and off from the rotating starter as it rotates.  It turns the relay into an on-off doorbell relay and it causes the starter to cycle on and off rapidly.  BAD mistake!!!!!   That ground should go to the chassis or the starter mounting bolt seen to the left of the thick red wire from the battery or the lower starter mounting bolt that is not visible.

Notice the YELLOW wire is feeding the relay white wire (the second yellow wire is hidden in this image behind the horizontal yellow wire into the black sheathing).  That is actually a doubled-up yellow wire that runs into the engine bay with an electrical speed-nut termination.  WHY?  Because I can jump start with a mechanics starter switch from the engine bay and not need to climb under the car twice to deal with that jump-starter hookup and then the hookup removal.  Note the yellow shrink-wrap on the blue wire since that is the substitute for the original yellow wire form the ignition to relay board.

This was my spare Bosch starter.  I am running a high-torque starter noted in some of the images of the transmission in other pages of this Website.

Hi-Torque Starter installed, note the corrected black ground wire for the relay on the lower starter to transmission housing bolt..

Extra ground wire from the transmission strap mount to the engine to transmission and starter bolt.  A clean ground with anti-oxidation gel at the transmission mount.  Magnesium is a lousy conductor and it oxidizes rapidly.  This is simple insurance for a great ground.
